Economic Impact Study
CAI completed an economic impact study of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that measured the foundation’s economic impact on the Greater Seattle Region. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is the largest, private foundation in the world, granting money to initiatives globally. At times, the foundation’s international work can overshadow its local grantmaking and programs. The report quantified direct impacts, which included jobs at the Seattle campus, wages paid to employees, contracts with local businesses and suppliers, and local grantmaking. Through economic impact models, CAI assessed how the foundation’s spending flows through the regional economy based on business-to-business purchases and wage spending.
The report also illustrated the catalytic influence of the foundation on the region’s nonprofits and the philanthropic sector, through specific examples and external data and perspectives. Interviews with stakeholders demonstrated how the foundation has helped shape the global health sector, and education and family homelessness policies.
